Eaton expands circuit breaker solutions for generator systems to support reliable power
PITTSBURGH -- Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton announced the availability of new VCP-WG circuit breakers that are engineered for large generator applications and interrupt high fault currents of power systems. The circuit breakers were engineered in Pennsylvania and are the first circuit breakers specifically designed to protect high powered generators with up to 75 kiloampere (kA) interrupting capability and high direct current (DC) fault content. Designed for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), Eaton generator breakers are applied across numerous industrial, process, and commercial systems.
“Eaton has designed, manufactured and tested a comprehensive range of circuit protection solutions for generator applications. These breakers are designed specifically for generator applications to fully protect power systems,” said Jhula Barua, product manager at Eaton.
The Eaton VCP-WG circuit breakers are designed for large generators, and can protect power generation from 10 megawatt (MW) up to 180 megawatt systems. Eaton VCP-WG generator breakers are engineered to handle high continuous alternating current and voltage and then switch through extreme out-of-phase voltages and high-stress asymmetrical currents.
The VCP-WG circuit breakers are an Eaton Green Leaf solution and meet stringent standards of sustainability and efficiency. The generator breakers incorporate Eaton’s environmentally-friendly vacuum interruption technology and avoid the use of Sulfur Hexafluoride (SF6), which contributes to the greenhouse gas effect.
VCP-WG breakers are availble with 50, 63 and 75 kA interruption capabilities. High interruption ratings are demonstrated through third-party laboratory testing, with up to 75 percent DC fault content.
The drawout breakers are designed to quitely and compactly handle high continous currents. The VCP-WG breakers are rated for up to 6000A with natural convection, and a maximum current rating of 7000A with fan cooling.
Eaton generator breakers meet the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE®) C37.013-1997 and C37.013a-2007 standards for generator circuit appplications. The generator circuit breakers exceed IEEE’s rate of rise of recovery voltage (RRRV) for interrupting conditions up to twice line to ground.
