On Thursday, French energy company EDF Group announced that France’s inaugural floating offshore wind farm, the 25-MW Provence Grand Large project off the Gulf of Fos, has been fully commissioned.

The project is a collaboration between EDF Renewables, Canada’s Enbridge Inc (TSE:ENB), and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPP Investments).

Situated 17 km (11 miles) off the coast of Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhone, the wind farm features three Siemens Gamesa turbines mounted on tension leg platforms, developed by SBM Offshore and IFP Energies Nouvelles. Prysmian supplied dynamic cables for the project.

EDF Group highlighted that there has been ongoing dialogue with local stakeholders since 2011. The project was selected by the state in 2016 and is supported by programmes from the EU, France’s Ecological Transition Agency (ADEME), and the South Region.

“This experience is invaluable as we advance with the construction of our second floating offshore wind farm, Mediterranee Grand Large, for which we were awarded the contract in December 2024,” stated Bernard Fontana, Chairman and CEO of EDF Group.

The announcement follows two years after the launch of the first floating platform for the project.
