Efficient Clean Coal Technology
Among a lot of interesting topics being discussed at SETA 2016, reducing emission and improving efficiency in coal fired plants is among a great focus. Mr. Ajit Nambiar, Vice President, Power and Gas Sales, Siemens Pte Ltd, Singapore shared a case study to the audience how to optimize combustion using laser absorption spectroscopy technology as the innovative and cost-effective solution developed by Siemens to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions and improve efficiency has been successfully piloted at a coal fired power plant in the UK.
The Siemens solution optimizes the combustion process through the individual control of burners and fans. It works by directing a series of laser beams across the furnace, which are able to detect the temperature, gases and solids at different points within it. Based on this new information, robust correlations between air/fuel controls and their impact on the overall combustion are identified. The solution then makes the corrections necessary to the boiler control settings – for example, individually balancing the air and fuel mix for small groups of burners – in order to optimize combustion.
The forum discusses the improvements achieved in increasing efficiency, cutting emissions – NOx, CO and CO2 – lowering carbon in ash, reducing fire-side corrosion and slagging in this case study which was executed at Engie’s 2000 MW West Burton and Cottam power plants.
