Engie Polska, a subsidiary of French utility Engie SA (EPA:ENGI), is committed to phasing out coal at its Polish heating plants by the end of 2025, transitioning to biomass, natural gas, or waste heat.

By 2026, Engie`s plant in Slupsk, a town in northern Poland, is projected to generate 80% of its heat energy from renewable sources, waste heat, and high-efficiency cogeneration. To achieve this, the company is converting its coal boiler to biomass and installing a heat pump that utilizes waste heat from treated sewage.

The system`s capacity, exceeding 124 MWth and 11.5 MWe through the use of diverse fuels and technologies, showcases the scale of investments, according to Marzena Gebala, marketing manager of Engie EC Slupsk.

In northwestern Zlotów, Engie is introducing biomass units with a total capacity of 10 MW in the first half of 2025. Additionally, gas boilers will be employed to maintain stable heat supplies during peak demand periods, particularly in colder weather.

Engie Polska`s initiatives in Slupsk and Zlotów aim to achieve a 65% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by 2026, aligning with Poland`s energy transition and Engie Group`s broader objective of attaining zero emissions in Europe by 2045.

Engie has been operating in Poland since the 1990s, engaging in heat generation and supply, electrical installation services, and renewable energy.
