Apr. 17, 2024

The Renewable Fuel Standard generated around 1.91 billion renewable identification numbers (RINs) in March, which is slightly lower than the 1.92 billion created in March of 2023, as indicated by data given by the U.S. The EPA will take action on April 18th. The total Renewable Identification Number (RIN) generation for the first quarter of 2024 amounted to around 5.86 billion, showing an increase over the 5.41 billion created during the corresponding time in the previous year.

In March, a total of 60.01 million D3 cellulosic biofuel RINs were produced. This includes 53.91 million RINs generated by domestic producers for compressed renewable natural gas (RNB), 3.12 million RINs generated by importers for liquefied RNG, 2.19 million RINs generated by domestic producers for liquefied RNG, 608,704 RINs generated by importers for compressed RNG, and 187,956 RINs generated by domestic producers for cellulosic ethanol.

The total amount of D3 RINs generated during the first quarter of this year was 136.78 million. The volume consists of 122.67 million units of compressed RNG generated by domestic producers, 6.47 million units of liquified RNG generated by importers, 5.82 million units of liquified RNG generated by domestic producers, 1.27 million units of compressed RNG generated by importers, and 561,954 units of cellulosic ethanol generated by domestic producers.

In March, a total of 648.19 million D4 biomass-based diesel RINs were produced. This includes 351.24 million RINs generated by domestic producers for nonester renewable diesel, 198.91 million RINs generated by domestic producers for biodiesel, 46.28 million RINs generated by foreign entities for nonester renewable diesel, 40.3 million RINs generated by importers for biodiesel, 9.06 million RINs generated by foreign entities for renewable jet fuel, and 3.39 million RINs generated by domestic producers for renewable jet fuel.
The cumulative D4 RIN production during the initial quarter of 2024 amounted to around 2.07 billion. The volume consists of 1.11 billion units of nonester renewable diesel produced by domestic producers, 568.68 million units of biodiesel produced by domestic producers, 182.04 million units of nonester renewable diesel produced by foreign entities, 178.71 million units of biodiesel produced by importers, 23.18 million units of renewable jet fuel produced by foreign entities, 6.73 million units of renewable jet fuel produced by domestic producers, and 157,995 units of renewable heating oil produced by domestic producers.

In March, a total of 13.3 million D5 advanced biofuel RINs were produced. This includes 6.05 million RINs for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 4.48 million RINs for naphtha by domestic producers, 2.11 million RINs for ethanol by domestic producers, 329,330 RINs for LPG by domestic producers, 264,883 RINs for renewable heating oil by domestic producers, and 62,223 RINs for renewable compressed natural gas by domestic producers.

The total production of D5 Renewable Identification Numbers (RINs) during the first quarter of current year amounted to 47.72 million. The volume consists of 21.58 million units of nonester renewable diesel produced by domestic producers, 16.98 million units of naphtha produced by domestic producers, 7.11 million units of ethanol produced by domestic producers, 1.28 million units of renewable heating oil produced by domestic producers, 651,462 units of LPG produced by domestic producers, and 128,082 units of compressed RNG produced by domestic producers.

In March, a total of around 1.19 billion D6 renewable fuel RINs were produced, primarily by local producers. Of these, 1.32 million were generated for biodiesel by domestic producers, while importers generated 1.13 million for ethanol.

The cumulative D6 RIN production for the initial quarter of current year amounted to 3.6 billion. The volume consists of 3.59 billion units produced by domestic producers for ethanol, 3.92 million units produced by domestic producers for biodiesel, 3.32 million units produced for ethanol by imports, and 2.29 million units produced for biodiesel by importers.

In March, importers generated a total of 60,193 D7 cellulosic diesel RINs, as reported by the EPA. These RINs were specifically for cellulosic heating oil. The total amount of D7 Renewable Identification Number (RIN) created in the first quarter was 120.411. These RINs were exclusively generated by importers for cellulosic heating oil.
