US electrolyser start-up EVOLOH Inc announced on Wednesday that it has secured a deal to supply 500 MW of its electrolyser stacks for low-carbon hydrogen production to a major, unnamed US-based renewable energy developer.

The agreement is backed by a non-refundable deposit, which will be applied to the purchase cost once EVOLOH completes its manufacturing centre of excellence in Lowell, Massachusetts, according to a press release.

"This contract highlights the significant advantages of EVOLOH`s electrolyser technology and manufacturing process, and adds to our existing commitments of over 16 GW for Nautilus stacks and modules," said CEO Jimmy Rojas.

This deal coincides with the launch of EVOLOH’s new pilot testing facility at its 25,000 square-foot headquarters in Santa Clara, California. Additionally, a second pilot site is scheduled to open in Lowell, Massachusetts, in 2025 for factory acceptance testing of full stacks up to 1 MW. Negotiations for large-scale commercial demonstration projects are ongoing, with commissioning expected in 2026.

"In Santa Clara, we are currently operating multiple stations with power ratings in the tens of kilowatts for pilot testing, and will soon be able to test stacks up to several hundred kilowatts," Rojas added.

Founded in 2020, EVOLOH leverages its patented Nautilus platform to produce advanced liquid alkaline electrolyser stacks using steel, plastic, and aluminium instead of precious metals or rare earth materials. This technology aims to reduce costs and technical risks while maintaining a compact and lightweight design. EVOLOH`s investors include Engine Ventures and NextEra Energy Resources.

In July, EVOLOH, in collaboration with Southern California Gas Co (SoCalGas), completed a joint research project to enhance its anion exchange membrane (AEM) technology and manufacturing process.
