Kerry Hamilton talks Energy Management Standards
energyTEAM hold a number of free energy forums that focus on energy and water related business topics. The video below provides an insight into one of the energyTEAM presentations at the 2013 Energy Forums.
Kerry Hamilton supports a wide variety of energyTEAM clients in various sectors; from corporate property companies to clay and plastics manufacturers. As Energy and Environment Manager, Kerry works alongside our clients to implement cost savings and energy reduction initiatives. In addition to this, Kerry works with organisations who may be part of the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme or those seeking certification to ISO 50001 and the Carbon Trust Standard.
Energy Management Standards and Accreditation: Carbon Trust Standard and ISO 50001
The Carbon Trust Standard
The Carbon Trust Standard (CTS) strapline is ‘Recognition for Real Carbon Reduction’. Essentially, the Carbon Trust Standard focuses on historical savings that you have made within your organisation. Therefore, to gain certification for this standard you will need to have proof that you have saved energy.
For example, over three years of historical data you will need to have made an absolute footprint reduction or a relative reduction to your benchmark. To put this into context, if you go back over 3 years of data and you think you have made a 3% reduction in energy that would usually be acceptable for the requirements of this standard.
ISO 50001
The ISO 50001 Energy Management Standard is entirely different to the Carbon Trust Standard and is much like 14001, 9001, 18001 Standards. However, ISO 50001 is focussed specifically on energy and does require you to make ongoing savings - and you will be audited against this.
ISO 50001 doesn’t just ensure that you have the processes in place, it makes sure that you do what you say you are going to do. Like many other ISO Standard, the ISO 50001 Energy Management Standard follows the Plan, Do Check, Act model.
It is important to remember that with an ISO standard you will fall into the ISO surveillance visit timeline where an auditor will come and check on your progress every 6 months. When looking at an ISO standard you will need to recognise that you are committing to the ongoing process of auditing.
In terms of certification, energyTEAM work with a number of accreditation bodies including BSI, BM TRADA, NQA, CICS etc. which allows us to support clients throughout the entire certification process. Once a client is ready, the appropriate accreditation body would then provide the certification.

Future Energy Forums
In June 2014, energyTEAM will be hosting two energy forums at the William Conference Centre in Oxford and the Old Trafford Football Stadium in Manchester. energyTEAM’s Energy Forums are specifically designed for Facilities, Energy and Procurement Managers from public and private sector organisations throughout the UK.
These forums will address important and topical business issues including Water Management, Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) and Renewable Technologies. The presentations promise inspirational ideas from both a client’s perspective and up-to-date knowledge from a number of energy and water specialists.
