National Grid Expands Volt/VAR Optimization (VVO) Deployment with Utilidata
Leading Software Company Will Bring its Real-Time Technology to Massachusetts
February 4, 2019 -- Utilidata, Inc., recently (1/31) announced National Grid is extending its real-time Volt/VAR Optimization (VVO) solution to the utility's customers in Massachusetts. This builds upon successful results from National Grid's deployments of Utilidata software in Rhode Island and New York.
Utilidata's relationship with National Grid began in 2013, with a smart grid pilot that delivered the company's flagship product, AdaptiVolt, to 16,000 customers across Rhode Island. Using real-time information from the distribution grid to optimize energy delivery, build resiliency, and boost sustainability, AdaptiVolt led to over 3% energy savings for National Grid's customers. These strong results led National Grid to expand the deployment, adding additional projects in Rhode Island in 2016, and operations in Clifton Park, New York, in 2017.
'National Grid has relied on Utilidata to enable efficient energy delivery to our customers in Rhode Island and New York,' said Chris Kelly, Senior Vice President of Electric Process and Engineering at National Grid. 'Our work together has led to significant savings year after year, so it only made sense to expand this solution to benefit our customers in Massachusetts. Utilidata makes it easy to optimize energy delivery, quickly proving their value with clear savings and results.'
AdaptiVolt has enabled utilities across the United States to optimize energy delivery to their customers. By using real-time information to fine-tune distribution delivery voltages, AdaptiVolt reduces energy usage at the grid-edge, creating efficiencies for utilities without any disruptions in service. The technology's ability to precisely monitor grid conditions also enables the reliable and cost-effective integration of wind and solar power, electric vehicles, and other distributed energy resources (DERs).
'Utilidata is incredibly proud to work with National Grid,' said Josh Brumberger, Utilidata's CEO. 'We are focused on bringing impactful, easy-to-implement solutions to our utility clients, and National Grid's use of our technology will ultimately benefit tens of thousands of customers in three separate states. We are excited to continue this relationship, lowering bills for more customers and helping National Grid lay the foundation for the clean grid of the future.'
Utilidata's additional utility clients include American Electric Power and a number of Midwest US utilities.
