Bulgarian firm International Power Supply (IPS) has commenced construction of its second battery energy storage system (BESS) production facility in Sofia, Bulgaria, which will increase its annual BESS production capacity to 4,000 MWh.

This initiative aims to meet the rising demand for turnkey, cyber-secure, European-manufactured BESS solutions, the company announced on LinkedIn.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place at HEMUS High-Tech Industrial Park on Thursday. The new facility will feature automated production of battery modules and packs, in-house manufacturing of battery management systems (BMS), liquid cooling systems, and inverters. Additionally, it will include an R&D center focused on new battery materials and power electronics.

"The new production facility will enable us to meet the increased demand from clients seeking turnkey utility-scale BESS systems that are entirely manufactured in Europe, addressing critical cybersecurity concerns and mitigating potential geopolitical and logistical challenges," stated Nikolay Mitov, Head of Business Development, Energy Transition at IPS.

IPS’s first BESS factory, which opened earlier this year in HEMUS high-tech park, is currently undergoing European Commission certification as a strategic manufacturing project under the Net-Zero Industry Act.

This announcement follows the recent introduction of the EXERON-BESS 8.1 MWh system at the ees Europe 2025 event in Munich.
