New York Power Authority Recognized for Innovative Leadership for Battery Energy Storage System
September 6, 2022 -- The New York Power Authority announced this week (Sept 1) that it received an Innovation Icon award from Cloud for Utilities for a first-of-its-kind battery storage system expected to serve as a model for commercial buildings looking for safer, lower-cost energy storage solutions. The pilot program spotlights Cadenza Innovation's superCell lithium-ion battery technology to showcase the role that energy storage can serve in enhancing demand management and grid flexibility while helping to advance New York State's nation-leading climate and clean energy goals.
'This pilot project being tested at NYPA's offices is breaking new ground in lithium-ion battery technology and showing how storage can be deployed in urban areas,' said Justin E. Driscoll, interim NYPA president and CEO. 'Collaborating with Cadenza Innovation is demonstrating how energy storage can reduce peak electricity demands and decrease the production of greenhouse gases in an effort to enable more integration of renewable energy resources into the electric grid.'
Cloud for Utilities' mission is to educate and empower utilities to innovate and improve outcomes and service for business, industry, and utility customers. The Icon Awards recognize leaders moving the needle forward and give a well-deserved spotlight to innovation in the utilities industry.
The award was presented yesterday to Alan Ettlinger, NYPA's senior director of Research, Technology Development and Innovation, at the 2022 Digital + Cloud Summit in Los Angeles, Calif. The award recognized the project for drastically impacting 'business outcomes or day-to-day operations of the utility for the better.'
'NYPA is powering' New York State's carbon-free transformation as part of the most ambitious clean energy and climate plan in the country,' said Cadenza Innovation Founder and CEO Dr. Christina Lampe-Onnerud. 'We are thrilled to be part of NYPA's journey and recognized for collaborating with the nation's largest state public power organization to showcase an innovative, cost-effective peak energy shaving solution that serves as a benchmark in the transition to a safe, resilient, clean energy future.'
Deployed immediately adjacent to NYPA's headquarters in White Plains and funded in part by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, the novel lithium-ion Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) was developed by Cadenza Innovation to showcase the key role that energy storage can play in enhancing demand management and grid flexibility. Through the project, NYPA is investigating the effectiveness of the energy storage system at reducing the peak load typical of a commercial building. The BESS can also serve as a model for integrating future renewable energy resources into the grid - especially in urban areas - and be replicated at other businesses throughout New York State and beyond.
The pilot program is based on Cadenza Innovation's listed superCell battery architecture that substantially reduces the risk of propagation of thermal runaway while packaging components to lower costs and increase safety, resulting in a design that improves energy density and advances the Li-ion battery industry.
The project is furthering New York's clean energy agenda, which includes the nation's most ambitious climate protection legislation and one of the largest energy storage targets of 3 gigawatts on the electric grid by 2030. Under the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA), New York State is mandated to achieve 70 percent renewable energy by 2030 and 100 percent zero-emission electricity by 2040.
