US-based thermal energy storage innovator Rondo Energy, in partnership with Siam Cement Public Co Ltd (SCG), has introduced Southeast Asia’s first industrial-scale heat battery at SCG’s cement plant in Saraburi Province, Thailand. The 33-MWh Rondo Heat Battery, powered by grid electricity and a nearby floating solar farm, delivers 2.3 MWth of continuous steam. Funded partly by Thailand’s Science, Research, and Innovation Promotion Fund, this modular system is the first globally capable of producing high-pressure steam for industrial use. The collaboration aims to expand deployment across SCG’s operations throughout ASEAN, targeting commercial-scale rollouts by 2026. Rondo’s technology stores renewable electricity as heat in bricks at temperatures up to 1,500°C, providing steam with up to 97% efficiency and enabling uninterrupted industrial processes.
