Statkraft, Norway`s state-owned utility, announced on Tuesday its application for a license to construct a new Aura hydropower plant in western Norway, estimated at NOK 6 billion (USD 584.8m/EUR 518.4m). This project represents one of Statkraft`s largest investments in decades.
The new plant will replace the existing two-station facility in Sunndal, enhancing maximum generation capacity from 310 MW to approximately 810 MW, achieving a 2.5-fold increase without additional water usage. Annual output is projected to rise by about 130 GWh, enough to power over 130,000 households.
Built deeper within the mountain, the new plant will feature advanced water tunnels and larger turbines, offering increased grid flexibility during peak demand periods. Currently, Aura contributes over 25% of the electricity generated in More og Romsdal county.
Project manager Are Paulsen stated, “Aura has been operational for over 70 years and requires upgrades. To ensure a stable and adequate power supply for the region`s future, constructing a new power plant is the optimal solution.”
Statkraft`s plans for Aura are part of a broader hydropower modernization strategy initiated in 2024, which includes upgrades at Nore I, Nore II, and Mauranger. These projects are anticipated to collectively increase Statkraft`s domestic hydropower capacity by 1,500 to 2,500 MW, or over 20%.
