Will Subsurface Aeration Help My Pond?
Your Pond Needs Dissolved Oxygen
Most people know that their pond needs oxygen, but it may be a challenge to add it. Subsurface aeration is an easy way to add oxygen and improve the water quality.
“A pond not only needs to absorb oxygen from the air but it also needs to release carbon dioxide and maybe hydrogen sulfide among other gases. Hydrogen sulfide is produced by anaerobic (without oxygen) bacteria breaking down organic matter in the bottom of the pond. The pond bottom has less oxygen than the upper layers of the pond especially if you have stone or gravel in the bottom of your pond. Anaerobic bacteria work in the absence of oxygen and cause a septic condition in the bottom of the pond.” WaterGarden.org
The water in the deepest parts of the pond need to be exposed to the atmosphere so it can release those harmful gasses. A still pond will struggle to accomplish this since there is no movement at the bottom. Subsurface aeration is the perfect way to circulate the water from the bottom to the top. Aeration rotates the water and brings the bottom layers of water to the top. The more exposure the water has to the atmosphere, the more harmful gasses can be released and oxygen can be absorbed.
“Cold water holds more oxygen than warm water because water molecules are closer together in cold water, which makes it harder for oxygen molecules to escape. The tighter structure is also conducive to a more consistent attraction between the oxygen and water molecules.” Reference.com https://www.reference.com/science/cold-water-hold-oxygen-warm-water-ebea012c9d2e9ac7
Because cold water holds more dissolved oxygen than warm water, the warmer months tend to create low oxygen levels problems for fish.
Subsurface Aeration
Subsurface Aeration can be defined as the introduction of compressed air into the bottom of a pond or lake using a self-cleaning, non-clogging Duraplate™ diffuser. When compressed air is released at the bottom it will naturally begin to migrate towards the surface of the water. As it travels up the water column the pressure surrounding the bubbles slowly decreases causing the bubbles to expand in size. Due to the fact that larger bubbles displace more water than smaller bubbles a slight current begins to develop. This current draws oxygen depleted water from the bottom, oxygenates it and transports it to the surface. This action mixes stratified water while increasing dissolved oxygen levels and protecting fish, aquatic organisms and beneficial microbes from suffocation.
Keeton Industries offers two types of aeration. Electric and Solar which are both Subsurface Aeration.
Solar Subsurface Aeration is perfect for those who don’t have power at their pond’s shore. Keeton has the only patented battery backup solar subsurface aeration system which can be set to aerate your pond at night using the store energy. The battery driven system will run 2-3 days with little or no sun. Dissolved oxygen increases throughout the day and decreases throughout the night and the most critical time to aerate is just before dawn. This is why battery driven systems are superior to any other alternative energy system. Consistent aeration when you need it most. Water can only hold so much dissolved oxygen, no matter how much you aerate. That is why it is so important to aerate consistently.
Electric Subsurface Aeration can aerate ponds as small as ¼ acre to 32 surface acres. Keeton Industries’ line of electrically powered pond aeration systems are the premier brand in the subsurface aeration market.
