DMT - Model KS22 - 2D Tower Vibration Sensor for Wind Turbines
Wind turbines have to withstand powerful forces including oscillations and vibrations. Such vibrations have to be monitored reliably to prevent damage and expensive downtime. Tower vibration monitoring is also compulsory under applicable directives such as the GL2010. Precise information about the actual vibrations together with the requirements pertaining to natural frequency provide a solid foundation in project work for optimising the calculation methods used in tower construction planning.
More safety with vibration sensors
The compact sensors KS22-U and KS22-I made by DMT measure tower oscillations in two dimensions within a measuring range of ± 5 g. Measured values are transmitted to the system controls in the form of a 5 ± 3 V or 4…20 mA signal, which allows for the system to be shut down safely if one of the specified thresholds is exceeded.
The sensors are also ideal for combination with WindSafe®, the condition monitoring system for wind turbines from DMT, and can also be integrated into existing safety systems.
A robust and reliable sensor technology is particularly important for vibration sensors that have to function in challenging environmental conditions.
The tower vibration sensors from DMT have what it takes to do the job: A robust housing, high protection class IP66 and a wide temperature range from -40°C to +65°C.
Our tower vibration sensors are available as standard models and custom-made to the specific requirements of our customers.
When integrated into the system controls or the Condition Monitoring System WindSafe®, the KS22-I and KS22-U sensors can log and report data on:
- Tower vibrations
- Blade resonances
- Imbalances
- Overstressing

Potential tower vibration measurement
The logged measurement data can also be used to assess the load history of wind turbines. This allows for more precise information about the total lifespan already exhausted.
For expert reports, the forecast lifespan is, contrary to estimations, based on real fatigue loads. This results in a more precise forecast, which in turn allows for smaller security margins (end of warranty / continued operation).
In combination with our other services, tower vibration measurement is an essential element in the optimisation of wind farms.
