Advent - Model HT-PEM MEAs - Fuel Cell Materials
MEAs (Membrane-Electrode Assemblies) are the heart of the fuel cell. Due to the high-temperature operation, our MEAs can work with impure hydrogen that can be reformed onboard from methanol, natural gas, and other renewable fuels (liquid sun, liquid wind).

Product Details
The MEA (Membrane-Electrode-Assembly) determines weight, power, lifetime, total cost of ownership of the fuel cell, and infrastructure investment.
MEA: The “heart” of the Fuel Cell
Advent continuously advances the field of MEAs having set the following goals:
Power Density increase
Dramatic increase in Power Density per cm2 that will allow inexpensive, smaller, and lightweight fuel cells.
10x reduction
10X reduction in Platinum Loading that will allow cost per kW to drop dramatically
Lifetime increase
Significant fuel cell lifetime increase that will enable new applications, cost of ownership and service requirements
Advent’s High-Temperature Membrane
Advent’s high-temperature membrane is based on pyridine type structures incorporated around a stable polymer backbone. Advent TPS® MEAs operate at 120 °C to 200 °C. Advent also fabricates a polybenzimidazole (PBI) based MEA under a license from BASF. Advent’s PBI MEA uses the same materials and assembly processes as developed by BASF for the P1100W HT-MEA and has the highest phosphoric acid content of any of the high-temperature membranes. Both materials use phosphoric acid as the electrolyte, do not need water for conductivity, and are based on polymers with excellent thermal and oxidative stability.
