An off grid or stand alone PV system is a system not connected to the electrical grid, as the name suggests.
How does an Off Grid system work?
The loads (usually household consumptions, but we can also speak of street lighting, for example) may be supplied either in AC or in DC. The off grid system stocks the solar energy that comes from the PV modules in the battery. It is used in the evening, during the night or in bad weather conditions. In this way, it is possible to dispose of electrical energy even where the public grid does not arrive. As backup, a gen-set or other sources of renewable energy might be used. Classical applicationsare as mentioned above, street lighting, mountain shelters, motor homes or watercrafts, water pump systems.
What does an Off Grid system consist of?
A PV stand alone system is composed of PV modules, a solar charge controller and a battery with adequate capacity, based on the energy consumption and the period of autonomy that is requested. Eventually there can also be an inverter for loads in AC.

What are the advantages?
Besides the obvious benefit to use electrical energy where the grid does not exist, there is also the fact of producing clean renewable energy. Indeed often in these cases, a diesel genset is used, that burns fossil fuel, pollutes the environment and produces noise. A PV off grid system instead is environmentally friendly, silent and uses clean solar energy.
