SMS - Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
We independently develop, own and operate Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) that serve a greener, resilient, and more flexible grid. With 25 years’ experience delivering large-scale electrical infrastructure across the country, we are today a market leader in the construction and operation of grid-scale battery storage sites.
Our specialist team design, supply, install, operate, maintain, and optimise our BESS projects working alongside a wide range of industry partners and other stakeholders, including landowners and local community members.
Expertise in site identification through in-house specialists and external exclusive partners
Development and design of projects, including planning, connections and land lease to generate ‘shovel-ready’ sites
Source, supply and build: from connection to asset commissioning upon energisation
A nationwide engineering operation, with dedicated monitoring for remote management
Multi-faceted strategies to maximise revenues accessing all available markets and services
Plan and perform repowering during the site life, maximising value by upgrading cell every c.10yrs.
Battery energy storage is an essential technology for overcoming the energy system’s biggest modern challenge: the transition to green energy. As renewables are intermittent, batteries connected to the National Grid are needed to store clean electricity whenever it is generated. In this way, green power can be supplied and consumed on demand by the UK population no matter what time of day it is, or what the weather is like.
In addition to helping phase out fossil fuels and reduce carbon emissions, batteries also play an increasingly vital role in stabilising, balancing, and protecting the grid, adding a much much-needed layer of flexibility as the UK moves to electrified transport and heating systems in coming years.
At all of our BESS sites and across our entire business, SMS is committed to leaving a positive environmental and social impact. This includes:
- Implementing a range of on-site biodiversity improvements
- Protecting habitats around the perimeter of the site with fencing
- Working closely and engaging regularly with the local community
- Installing a low-carbon technology critical for carbon reduction
