Demonstration Plant for Hydrogen-based Direct Reduction

The demonstration plant includes the production of hydrogen gas, and the production of sponge iron through direct reduction with hydrogen gas. The plant will be built on the Vitåfors industrial area in Gällivare municipality.

The project is now working on studying the conditions on the site and various alternatives in order to clearly design the process and place the plant parts for the best efficiency and safety as well as the lowest environmental impact. The same applies to the facility`s external supply of energy and inputs as well as product and by-product deliveries.

The demonstration plant for direct reduction with hydrogen involves development in several technical areas. The unique and innovative aspect of the facility is to industrialize known technology and develop certain strategic technology areas and to put this together into a whole - to enable and scale up the fossil-free process to an industrial and commercial scale. The development work is ongoing through studies, in laboratories and through the extensive test campaigns that take place in the pilot plant for direct reduction in Luleå. Technical solutions are optimized and verified there. The technology development is ongoing in parallel with the plant design, the work with financing and the permit work.
