EcoGuard - Energy Management Outlet and Meter
The EcoGuard is an intelligent power outlet that monitors and stops the flow of power to one or both outlets, turning off energy-consuming loads. The EcoGuard combats “energy vampires”, or devices on standby power, that continue to draw energy from a power outlet.

Intelligent Lighting and Standard Load Control with EcoSmart
The EcoGuard is a versatile and integral part of the EcoSmart energy management system. The device has the ability to monitor and stop the flow of power to one or both outlets, turning off lamps, televisions, appliances, and any other energy-consuming loads. In addition to preventing power to an empty room, the EcoGuard also combats “energy vampires.” Energy vampires, or devices on standby power, are products that use power when turned off but are still plugged into a power outlet. On a national basis, standby power accounts for more than 100 billion kilowatt hours of annual U.S. electricity consumption and more than $10 billion in annual energy costs. The EcoGuard completely disconnects devices from the power supply, preventing lights and other in-room electronics from needlessly consuming energy.
Installed in new construction or using the wiring already in place in existing buildings, the flush-mounted EcoGuard energy management outlet can control lighting and standard loads using commands from an EcoSmart thermostat or occupancy sensor, a Property Management System, a schedule, or a manual command. With 120V configuration, an industry-standard ZigBee wireless module for communication, and the ability to seamlessly blend into any room, the EcoGuard provides complete control over any device that consumes electricity.
Data Monitoring and Reporting
In addition to providing advanced energy management capability, the EcoGuard has a builtin true power meter to provide energy usage data previously available only from expensive metering devices. The EcoGuard monitors cost, voltage, amperage, kWh, and other metrics at 15-minute intervals. To help a property perform a detailed energy usage analysis, the EcoGuard provides detailed, time-stamped data to the EcoCentral management platform, including:
- kWh consumption by time of use price [Off-peak, Mid-peak, On-peak]
- Occupancy time by time of use price [Off-peak, Mid-peak, On-peak]
- Energy usage separated by occupied and unoccupied states
- Occupied/unoccupied time in seconds since installation
- Power Factor
Viewing data and generating reports is simple with EcoCentral, Telkonet’s cloud-based facility management platform. Users can analyze raw data, share pre-compiled charts and graphs, and monitor real-time savings information to determine the kWh saved with the EcoSmart system.
Installation, Communication, and Control
Telkonet designed the EcoGuard to fit seamlessly into any room. The EcoGuard flush-mounts into a standard electrical box. For easy configuring, the EcoGuard has an LED to provide visual verification of communication established between the EcoGuard and another EcoSmart device, Property Management System, or network interface.
EcoCentral manages the data that the EcoGuard collects as well as providing a platform for room and facility control. From any web-connected PC, tablet, or smartphone, users can monitor the status of the EcoGuard, view system reports, launch events such as a load shed, or command the EcoGuard to stop or start the flow of power to its outlets.
