Mitsubishi ElectricGas Insulated Switchgear (GIS)

SHARE

Mitsubishi Electric began its industry leadership in Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS), building its first in 1968. In 1973, it installed the first 500kV hybrid gas-insulated substation. Three years later, Mitsubishi Electric constructed the world’s first 550kV fully gas insulated switchyard at the Ohi Nuclear Power Station, which is the largest nuclear power plant in Japan. Since then, more than 20,000 GIS bays have been installed in substations worldwide.

Standard Air Insulated Substations (AIS) require large amounts of space in strategic locations. Because GIS requires up to 90 percent less space than AIS installations, substation developers and planners have greater design flexibility when employing GIS technology. In fact, Mitsubishi Electric GIS is so compact it can be located inside a building or underground, hidden from view and shielded from the elements.

MEPPI tailors each GIS solution to its intended application and excels at:

  • Brown Field Retrofit Installations
  • Green field installations where aesthetics or a small footprint is required
  • Interfacing with and replacing old GIS equipment (in situ-replacements)
  • Space-saving additions to existing switchyards

MEPPI can also accommodate hybrid gas-insulated and air insulated designs for substations. A hybrid application of GIS employs the same dead tank circuit breakers, SF6 gas insulated disconnects and grounding switches to individual air-insulated arrangements. When GIS is used for individual voltage control applications, such as reactor or capacitor switching in an air insulated switchyard, utilities can achieve up to a 70 percent decrease in footprint.

When protection of transmission and distribution facilities are on the line, Mitsubishi Electric Gas Insulated Switchgear is the equipment of choice. Complete turnkey substation installations in North America, developed in our Warrendale, PA facility have been installed in urban, coastal and power plant environments.

This is the right choice technically, financially and from a regulatory basis. Mitsubishi Electric has a unique design of switchgear; compact size, lifetime performance, a continually decreasing use of SF6 gas, a proprietary leak free enclosure, and renown customer support & warranty.

Mitsubishi Electric GIS represents switchgear ranging from 72.5 kV to 800 kV and from single phase to three phase designs. MEPPI offers GIS based circuit breakers, GIS based switchgear and our vacuum based, chassis mounted HS-X switchgear.
