Model VIU Series -Power Converters for Electric Locomotives
VIU series converters serve for converting single phase AC with 50 Hz frequency to direct current for the power supply of DC traction motors in the traction mode and for converting DC to single phase AC with 50 Hz frequency in regenerative braking mode of the electric locomotive. The VIU–4000M-UHL2 is suitable for 2ES5K, 3ES5K, and E5K locomotives. The VIU–5600-UHL2 is suitable for EP1M and EP1P locomotives.
Use of the converter provides:
- significant increase of the unit service life due to no-contact control;
- increase in electric traction of locomotive by around 12%;
- saving up to 15 per cent of electric power consumed by the electric locomotive due to recuperation;
- saving brake shoes – 12 tones/year.

The converters are made of three units: power unit (PU), power supply unit (PSU) and Diagnostic Test Unit (DTU), which controls the operation of the converter parts.
