Common grid failures
The Dutch power grid can experience different types of outages, which can be roughly divided into two categories:
Mains power failures
- Short breaks: Momentary power supply failure.
- Total mains power failure: Complete failure of the power supply for an extended period of time.
- Frequency fluctuations: Fluctuations in the frequency of alternating current (normally 50 Hz in the Netherlands).
- Voltage fluctuations: Fluctuations in mains voltage (normally 230V in the Netherlands).
- Harmonics: Distortions of the sinusoidal waveform of alternating current.
Load disturbances
- Fluctuations in load: Changes in the amount of power consumed by appliances.
- Unbalanced loads: Uneven load distribution across the three phases of the power grid.
- Overload: Excessive power consumption, exceeding power grid capacity.
- Peak currents: Short-lived, very high current spikes when devices are switched on.
- Short circuit: Direct connection between phase and neutral, creating a very high current.
A good power conditioning system (PCS) is essential to protect your electrical equipment from these disturbances. The PCS must be able to detect and correct all these disturbances so that it can always provide high-quality power to your equipment, regardless of grid conditions.
