Biodiesel production, in general, uses 100% excess of methanol* to ensure a complete and timely reaction to specification. Methanol recovery is essential to maximise process economies and meet international specifications.

This excess methanol partitions between the biodiesel and glycerol components. Current methods require harsh conditions of temperature and vacuum for methanol removal and lead to recovery losses of up to 20% (as witnessed in plants across the world).

The use of SmartCat™ in Ceimici Novel’s process recovers methanol close to 100%.

*The biodiesel process requires 10 parts methanol per 100 parts oil for the stoichiometric ratio.

Normally the process uses 100 parts oil and 20 parts methanol This extra ‘10 parts’ methanol is called `100% excess` and it`s this ‘10 parts’ that is recovered and recycled. For completeness, the first 10 parts methanol ends up as 10 parts glycerol and the 100 parts oil ends up as 100 parts biodiesel.

Bio Washing

Biodiesel containing methanol, trace catalyst and glycerol is washed.

Conventional biodiesel processing usually entails methanol evaporation followed by biodiesel washing to remove final traces of methanol catalyst and glycerol.

No Monoglyceride Increase

Ceimici Novel asserts that washing the crude biodiesel to remove methanol trace catalyst and glycerol is a more expedient process, avoiding any possibility of monoglyceride content increase and delivering full methanol recovery while eliminating all vacuum control issues.

Since SmartCat does not make soap, the quantity of water required for the washing process is dramatically reduced.
