Ceimici Novel - Model SmartCat - Solution for Biodiesel Production Issues
SmartCat™ delivers fast and complete transesterification as part of a continuous production process. Stage 1 at 60-62°C with 0.5% SmartCat™ for 2 hours producing 90% biodiesel and methanol. Stage 2 at 60-62°C with 35% SmartCat™ yields 100% biodiesel with trace catalyst and glycerol.
Properties
Fast
Unlike sodium methylate, SmartCat™ is insoluble in methanol, triglyceride and methyl ester but soluble in glycerol. While temperature and catalyst concentrations are important for the rate of conversion, the degree of agitation is the most significant consideration.
While today`s biodiesel production using sodium methylate centres around twin batch tank or continuous flow arrangements using 60 mins of processing time, SmartCat™ has the activity to complete the manufacture in
Processing
No Reaction
Under standard processing conditions SmartCat™ does not react with fatty acid nor does it catalyse the hydrolysis of triglyceride to fatty acid.
Glycerol
The basic quality of today’s glycerol production is compromised by the choice of caustic catalysts - the majority of the catalyst and soap ends up in the glycerol layer.
The recovery of the fatty acid by acidulation with hydrochloric acid converts the catalyst and soap to sodium chloride generally in the range of 6% in the glycerol layer. Sodium chloride at this level is soluble in glycerol thus complicating the downstream refining process.
SmartCat™ remains intact in the glycerol layer and is easily removed, taking the typical level of crude glycerol up from a minimum of 95% to >99%.

B100 Specification
Use of SmartCat™ will achieve ASTM D6751 and EN14214 consistently. Tough specifications such as cold soak and monoglyceride levels are easily attained and exceeded while downstream bottlenecks such as separation are made redundant.
