Heat pumps can also be used effectively in older houses if the heating system is correctly dimensioned. For a heat pump to run efficiently, it must consume little electricity. Experts consider an annual performance factor of 4 to 5 to be ideal. This means that the heat pump generates four to five kilowatt hours of heat from one kilowatt hour of electricity. If this value is achieved, it works economically; the high costs of purchasing and installing it pay for themselves more quickly. If a photovoltaic system generates the electricity for the heat pump, its efficiency is also improved. High levels of government funding also make purchasing it profitable.

Heat from air, soil or water is compressed in a pipe system using electricity and heats water for heating, bathrooms or kitchens. Most heat pumps are monoblocks with one structural unit. The two modules of so-called split heat pumps are installed separately from one another.

Heat pumps are also suitable for use in older buildings with higher heat requirements. However, not every type is useful. Water heat pumps or geothermal heat pumps are more efficient, but are much more expensive to buy. For geothermal heat pumps, geothermal probes have to be laboriously sunk into the ground, and surface collectors require a large area to be laid underground next to the house.
