Underground Energy Storage

SHARE

As the world generates more electricity from intermittent renewable energy sources, there is a growing need for technologies which can capture and store energy during periods of low demand and release it rapidly when required. At Gravitricity we are developing long-life, below-ground technologies which store energy safely and deliver it on demand at a lower lifetime cost than current alternatives. Our gravity and hydrogen storage technologies each offer unique attributes, ideally suited to the fast-evolving energy markets of tomorrow.

Cost effective

Levelised costs well below lithium-ion batteries

These special characteristics mean Gravitricity’s gravity energy storage is ideally suited to the following use cases:

  1. Grid services. Delivering power to distribution and transmission network operators (DNOs and TSOs) for grid balancing and frequency regulation, allowing them to ensure quality and security of supply with a technology designed to last for decades.
  2. Co-location. By coupling gravity storage with large scale renewable generation at the same site, solar farm owners and operators can time-shift solar supply to high price peak periods, reduce connection costs and stack revenue streams.
  3. Industrial decarbonisation. On-site energy storage can support industries including mining, oil and gas and date centres to decarbonise their operations through reducing grid demand, increasing the resilience and reliability of supply, and delivering ancillary service income.
  4. Energy access. Gravity storage can be designed into mini grids allowing utilities and mini grid developers to reduce infrastructure spend and deliver better energy access to rural and off grid communities, especially during non-daylight hours.
