VRB-ESS - Model MW-Class - Energy Storage Solution
Based on a 250kW or 500kW containerized building block, in 4, 6 and 8 hour configurations, systems are scaled from 1MWh to 200MWh. VRB® Energy’s MW-Class VRB-ESS® can be combined with almost any volume of electrolyte. Suitable for deployment at utility substations, as peaker plant replacements and on solar or wind farms, as well as at commercial and industrial sites or in microgrids.

VRB-ESS® MW-Class systems are based on 500kW containerized Power Modules. They are typically at least 2MW in power rating with at least 4-hours of energy, with some configurations up to 100MW, suitable for deployment at utility substations, large commercial, industrial and mining sites, and in support of solar or wind farms and microgrids.
Each VRB-ESS® MW-Class system can be combined with almost any volume of electrolyte according to the requirements of a particular application. Typical configurations use four, six or eight hours of storage depending on the amount of energy required.
VRB-ESS® MW-Class Power Modules have a nominal rating of 500kW AC, and have charge and discharge characteristics optimized for providing the maximum output power per unit cost.
VRB-ESS® MW-Class benefits:
- Low cost, Safe, Scalable
- 100% Capacity, Long Life
On the utility side, VRB-ESS® deliver a variety of ancillary services and peak power management. Systems can respond to grid conditions within ½ cycle, providing frequency and voltage support in real time, while simultaneously reserving energy for peak power management and ramp rate control. VRB-ESS® enable utilities and renewable energy developers to deliver energy (particularly solar and wind energy) when it is most valuable, and make more efficient use of existing infrastructure.
On the customer side, “behind-the-meter” at large C&I facilities and mining sites, VRB-ESS® reduce operating expenses through multiple benefit streams:
- Reduction of peak demand charges from utilities.
- Integration and optimization of on-site renewable energy.
- Provision of backup power that reduces losses in the event of utility outages.
- Reduction of wear on equipment through improvement of power quality.
Low LCOE
Low LCOE
100% depth of discharge with no degradation yields low LCOE.
Recyclable
The electrolyte can be fully recycled at end of project lifetime, saving cost and avoiding the expensive disposal costs of other batteries.
System Safety
Systems are non-flammable and operate at low temperature and low pressure.
Reliable
Proven performance and robust design yield high availability and low maintenance costs.
Fast Response
Fast dynamic response for transition between charge and discharge or between operating power levels in less than 100ms.
Quality
VRB-ESS® have been reviewed and are in compliance with European system quality and safety guidelines.
