What is Odor?

Webster’s New World Dictionary defines odor as “that characteristic of a substance which makes it perceptible to the sense of smell.” Odor, also known as smell or olfaction, is a crucial sense that allows humans to perceive and interpret the chemical compositions of their surroundings. It plays a fundamental role in daily life, influencing food preferences, social interactions, and even warning signals of potential dangers such as spoiled food or hazardous chemicals.

Our sense of smell operates through two primary mechanisms. The first mechanism involves a general warning or awareness system by sending a signal to the brain indicating the presence of an odor, whereas the second mechanism identifies the odorous gas molecules based on their chemical structure.
