Anaerobic digestion is a biological process in which microorganisms break down organic matter in the absence of oxygen. This process produces methane-rich biogas which can be transformed into energy. Biogas is primarily a composition of methane, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) produced by the anaerobic digestion. Biogas has high methane content. Methane is a natural gas equivalent which can be utilized as fuel in a combined heat and power unit (CHP) to generate electricity. Additional energy can be recovered from the waste heat generated by the CHP.
The generation of clean energy by anaerobic digestion is possible from many types of feedstocks. Swine and dairy farms (CAFO’s) are excellent locations for digesters since the waste produced by the livestock emits high levels of greenhouse gas. We have constructed similar projects involving organic wastewater in the municipal and industrial sectors as well as municipal solid waste landfills.
