CreweCNG Filling Station Service

SHARE

CNG Services Ltd owns and operates a CNG filling station off Weston Road, Crewe. The station is open 24 hours a day. Located just 10 minutes from Junction 16 of the M6, our filling station has the capacity to fill more than 500 dual-fuel tractor units per day. The fast-fill system at Crewe enables the filling of vehicles at both 200 bar and 250 bar. There are 2 compressors and 3 fast-fill hoses which, coupled with 3,850kg of CNG storage, means a highly reliable CNG supply is available.

Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is made from natural gas taken from the gas grid. The gas is then compressed to 300bar and stored in a bank of high pressure vessels, ready to be transferred via fast fill dispensers into vehicles. CNG is a lower cost, lower emission alternative to petrol and diesel. There are now 14 million CNG vehicles in the world, 1.1 million in the EU.

Forecasts from DECC indicate a widening gap between oil and natural gas prices in the future, due to a worldwide abundance of natural gas. Secondly, CNG fuel duty is applied which is linked to the duty on diesel but at a much lower rate.

The third component relates to the provision of the compression service to convert natural gas out of the gas grid into CNG on board the truck. Added together, a typical haulier can expect around a 30% reduction in the cost of fuel per mile for a dual-fuel tractor.

CNG Services can provide either a fixed price for CNG or a price which links to the price of diesel.

CNG Services Ltd (CSL) owns and operates a CNG filling station off Weston Road, Crewe. The station is open 24 hours a day. Located just 5 miles from Junction 16 of the M6 our filling station has the capacity to fill more than 500 dual-fuel tractor units per day.

CNG is used by vehicles that have either been specifically built to run on CNG or converted to run on dual-fuel (CNG and diesel).

CNG makes an excellent vehicle fuel for combustion engines due to its high octane rating and low carbon content. These characteristics mean a more complete combustion and results in reduced exhaust emissions. This clean burning characteristic reduces engine stress and extends engine life.

Along with vehicles that are 100% dedicated CNG, the development of dual-fuel diesel-natural gas engines is transformational, allowing engines to run on 40% diesel and 60% CNG. This results in lower CO2, from burning methane instead of the C12 hydrocarbons found in diesel.

The cost of CNG comprises three elements. The largest part relates to the cost of natural gas which is significantly lower on an energy basis than oil, as shown in the graph below.

Using CNG fueled vehicles has a number of advantages:

  • In dual-fuel (diesel/CNG) trucks, tail pipe CO2 emissions are around 15% lower than diesel.
  • CNG is the cleanest burning fuel operating today. This means less vehicle maintenance and longer engine life.
  • Dedicated natural gas vehicles have little or no emissions during fueling. In petrol/diesel vehicles, fueling emissions account for at least 50% of a vehicle`s total hydrocarbon emissions.
  • CNG produces significantly less pollutants such as PM10`s and NOx than petrol or diesel, generally meeting or exceeding the Euro 5 emissions standard.
