System Planning & Studies

Jones Edmunds assists communities with long-range planning for their electric utility systems. Our services include analyzing system condition and configuration, preparing load projections, and recommending changes or additions to improve operation under both normal conditions and contingency or emergency situations.

We provide assistance to electric utilities in their roles as both buyers and sellers of electricity. We work with client staff to help utilities negotiate power supply contracts that result in savings for the utility and properly structured rates for its customers.

Low voltage Power Distribution

Jones Edmunds has provided a wide range of standard design services and special engineering services for numerous clients at distribution voltage levels from 2.4 kV to 26.4 kV and at transmission voltage levels up to 240 kV.

Our design services have encompassed all aspects of line design such as establishing conductor sag and tension parameters, calculating wire and wind loads on structures, providing ease of maintenance, and maintaining clearances and structural strength to satisfy Florida Public Service Commission storm-hardening guidelines and to exceed the requirements of the National Electrical Safety Code. Jones Edmunds has prepared plans, construction drawings, equipment and material specifications, construction specifications, and bid documents for new construction, modifications, and voltage conversions for overhead and underground line facilities. We have also been involved in projects that extended distribution design to include planned residential developments, distribution service facilities, metering, and street lighting. Our most recent transmission line project placed into service is a 69-kV line for the City of Ocala, and three other projects are under construction.

Jones Edmunds has provided preliminary engineering services, including establishing design criteria (Design Memoranda), preparing Preliminary Engineering Reports, performing route selection studies, and developing budgetary construction cost estimates. We recently completed a Preliminary Engineering Report for the State Road 500 Electric Utility Relocation for the City of Leesburg.

Emergency Power Generation

Our services include analyzing system conditions and configurations, preparing load projections, and recommending changes or additions to improve operation under normal conditions as well as under contingency or emergency situations.

Many of Jones Edmunds’ industrial facility and remote site designs require standby power generation capabilities and may include features such as diesel, gas, or bi-fuel generators; paralleled generators; generator switchgear; automatic transfer switches; sound-attenuated and/or ballistic-rated enclosures; portable generator provisions; or process automation interaction when the electrical system is on generator. Our designs range from several hundred kW to several MW in capacity. Some of our larger generator designs in Florida have been completed for the City of St. Cloud, the Citrus County School Board, and Lee County.

SCADA Systems

The operator of any utility or facility needs to maintain a history of system conditions to properly monitor equipment and feeder loading. Furthermore, real time information is often critical to the operator, especially in the event of the system disturbances. A Supervisory Control and Data Aquisition (SCADA) system provides this type of information. Distribution automation takes SCADA one step further by automatically performing switching and other tasks to more quickly restore service to a particular area. Jones Edmunds has been instrumental in establishing SCADA systems for a number of municipal electric, water and wastewater facilities, and our company has tracked the continuing improvements and expanded capabilities of such systems.

Lighting Systems

Jones Edmunds has provided streetscape lighting for several roadway projects. Many are through Downtown Redevelopment projects and infrastructure upgrades, which can include streetscaping, lighting, crosswalks, sidewalk replacement, landscaping, irrigation systems, and street overlay. We have redeveloped infrastructure for several in-state municipalities, including the City of Madison, the City of Bradenton, and the City of High Springs.

Protective Relaying & Controls

Jones Edmunds has evaluated and designed protective relay and control systems for substations, transmission lines, and distribution feeders using microprocessor-based, solidstate, and electromechanical technologies. Some designs have extended beyond relay and control schematics to include panel structural, panel wiring, and interconnection elements. We have also coordinated relays and prepared relay settings.

System Mapping & Inventory

Jones Edmunds has comprehensive electric transmission and distribution mapping experience. We have performed comprehensive mapping of several thousand miles of transmission lines across 23 counties, including right-of-way and the underlying property ownership of over 8,000 parcels. We have mapped thousands of private and public electric distribution easements for numerous municipalities (using coordinate geometry). Jones Edmunds has also performed comprehensive electric distribution system inventories of thousands of poles, creating connected geometric networks. Our focus is clear, providing our utility clients with quality, innovative and cost-effective solutions to their changing and demanding needs.

Permitting & Regulatory Support

Our engineers provide design services, permitting services, and monitoring and documentation services during construction for all elements of electric utility systems. Our design experience includes overhead and underground systems with operating voltages ranging from 2.4 kV to 240 kV.
