Energy-Environment Technology Development
The Energy-Environment Technology Development (EETD) Division of TERI focuses on products and services based on renewable energy technologies and resource efficiency through multidisciplinary approach and close user interaction. The activities range from providing biomass-gasifier-based electricity in remote rural areas to promoting green concepts in the urban settings to utilizing biomass in small- and micro-enterprises efficiently.

To facilitate faster uptake of clean energy technologies the Division also focuses on policy, planning, and regulatory aspects; investment-related studies; and climate change mitigation, in association with TERI's other research divisions. The focus areas of the Division are as follows.
- Mainstreaming renewable energy
- Advancing bio-energy solutions
- Managing and transforming the waste in an environment-friendly manner
The rich knowledge borne out of its action-oriented research in India has helped the Division to apply sustainable energy solutions globally, especially in the developing countries. Under a multidisciplinary activity supported by the Government of India and coordinated by the Division, the Integrated Energy Master Plan was prepared for Bhutan. The Division is also engaged in the development of biomass gasification pilot activities in Uganda with the support of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, Government of Uganda, besides setting up 20 biomass-gasifier-based community electrification projects in Myanmar.
The Division is working closely with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization in establishing the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Regional Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency in Sierra Leone, Africa, with an aim to increase access to modern energy services and improve energy security in 15 West African countries. Likewise, the Division is coordinating with the Pacific Islands Applied Geo-science Commission and Pacific Islands Forum for capacity development under a Government of India initiative. The Division is also involved in the setting up of the Centre for Energy Innovation and Sustainable Cities in Mexico City.
The Division is laying a lot of emphasis on developing and propagating efficient and environmentally benign solutions to address energy security, on the one hand, and climate change, on the other, especially in developing countries, including the small island developing states.
Towards this, a partnership is being forged with the Technical University of Denmark to develop a variant of the two-stage gasifier system suitable for decentralized power generation applications in India. Work has also been initiated to develop a solar-biomass hybrid cooling system for combined, decentralized cold storage, and power generation application in rural areas, in collaboration with Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), Australia, along with the industrial partners. Activities are also planned around integrated solar photovoltaic and thermal technology, solar desalination systems, and renewable-energy-based power solutions for base transreceiver stations.
The Division is involved in carrying out research on biomass-to-liquid fuels, value-added products from different biomass feedstocks, and bio-refinery wastes, and developing not only an efficient process for converting lignocellulosic biomass into ethanol but also biodegradable plastics and composites and cost-effecive ash filters for sugar cane juice clarification and wastewater treatment.
