ISO & RTO
Regional Transmission Operators (RTO) & Independent System Operators (ISO) are responsible for coordinating the movement of energy throughout their defined geographic areas in the United States. A couple of examples include PJM, NYISO and ISO-NE. Verisae, through our integrated Smart Grid technology platform, has an energy management system that provides unique visibility into the electricity grid for RTOs.
Challenges Faced by RTOs & ISOs Today
ISOs and RTOs need to manage the fluctuating supply needs and reliability of the customers in their region. They face new challenges such as managing sources of energy generation given the new carbon constraints, incorporating new sources of intermittent renewable supply sources into the grid, and administering new demand response programs so customers take an active role in helping them balance the grid.
Value of Verisae Smart Grid Platform to RTOs & ISOs
Based on system needs, Verisae’s Energy Demand Manager product can help to reduce the energy load on the grid wherever and whenever it may be needed. Verisae can help the ISO balance energy needs on a daily and node-by-node basis. This will enable the ISO & RTO provide relief in areas facing system constraints. It will also help the RTOs & ISOs to better incorporate renewable energy into the grid as these sources typically fluctuate with changes in weather patterns, sun exposure, or wind levels.
Scenarios of Smart Grid Use by RTOs & ISOs
- Enablement of load shifting across the “virtual grid” of Verisae customers who participate in demand response events with a number of different utility companies
- Verisae’s smart grid platform provides visibility to the asset-level across a dispersed customer footprint so RTOs can better understand load patterns and needs close to real-time
- Verisae can help balance a renewable energy portfolio with customer curtailment on low renewable energy production days
