The government introduced Feed in Tariffs (FITs) in April 2010 to incentivise small scale (less than 5MW), low carbon energy generation. The scheme introduced a generation tariff which pays a sum of money for any energy generated even if it is used by the site where it is generated. Any extra electricity that is generated and not used can be sold back to the grid. The introduction of FITs has led to an increase in renewable electricity production from organisations, businesses, communities and individuals.
