Scenario & Policy Studies Services
The increasing need to improve the sustainability of our energy supply calls for the development of policy and policy measures for the promotion and support of bioenergy. BTG helps local, national and supra-national governments, but also NGO’s and large companies, with the development of such policies. Examples of services include scenario studies on bioenergy, ex-ante evaluations of specific policy tools, and the development of protocols to safeguard sustainability of projects and project activities.

In the study ‘Sustainability Criteria & Certification Systems for Biomass Production’. the possibilities of obligatory biomass certification on EU level have been explored, based on experiences with existing certification systems like FSC, PEFC, RSPO etc. The main WTO and other barriers toward obligatory certification covering carbon balances, biodiversity, competition with food, indirect land use, social and local environmental effects have been addressed, leading to the formulation of a possible way forward. Commissioned by the European Commission (DG TREN).
Recent examples
Bioenergy’s role in the EU Energy Market. This study was aimed at developing scenarios on the envisaged contribution of bioenergy to the EU energy market by 2010 and 2020. The study took into consideration the various policy instruments, such as the Directives on RES-Electricity and on biofuels, as well as bioenergy’s potential contribution to achieving Kyoto commitments. Commissioned by the European Commission (DG TREN).
