Site Services

As more utilities opt to focus solely on their core business, primarily power generation, Holtec’s Site Services Division is increasingly utilized to manage the full scope of the spent fuel storage projects to free utility resources. Holtec’s goal is to help its clients solve their most challenging problems through innovative thinking, practical engineering, advanced fabrication processes, and experienced site implementation teams. Holtec strives toward this goal with an attitude of continuous improvement, leveraging in-house expertise in technical and licensing services, material development, manufacturing, and site construction services to provide integrated products and services, often on a turnkey basis.

Site services rendered by Holtec International fall under three categories:

  • Pool-to-pad dry cask loading services
  • Wet storage spent fuel capacity expansion
  • Site construction services

Holtec’s dry cask loading services capabilities have steadily grown to serve our clients needs.  As the installer of our own dry spent fuel storage equipment, Holtec consistently capitalizes on its institutional, in-depth design know-how to refine the site services processes, ancillary equipment design and the configuration of dose mitigation devices, as well as the “human factor” aspects of handling equipment to reduce the occupational dose to the installation crew.  The end result is timely, low dose project implementations that save our clients dose and money while allowing them to focus on their core business. Holtec has provided pool-to-pad dry cask loading services of over 130 canisters at utilities in the U.S, This number continues to steadily increase at the rate of 40-60 canisters per year.

Holtec’s foundation is built on our extensive experience in the design, analysis, fabrication and installation of spent fuel wet storage systems in nuclear power plants, both domestically and internationally.  Holtec has performed spent fuel storage rack removal and installation services for more than 100 spent fuel pools since the company’s beginning in 1986.  Spent fuel storage rack removal and installation site services work involves rigging and heavy load handling in and around spent fuel pools with rigorous compliance to NUREG 0612 and ANSI N14.6 and defense-in-depth requirements.

A project completed safely, on-time and on budget is Holtec’s commitment to our clients. To carry out this commitment, Holtec maintains an experienced group of degreed engineers skilled in civil design and field construction work. Holtec renders most of the construction activities as part of the company’s turnkey projects to implement dry spent fuel storage systems; however, in some instances clients engage the services of the Site Services Division under a stand-alone contract. Holtec’s experts stand ready to engage in complicated, multi-disciplinary projects and successfully manage the project from conception to completion.
