Today, the U.S. maintains about 8,000 MW of cumulative operating PV capacity. In recent years, that number has grown dramatically. According to a recent Solar Energy Industries of America report [1], “Utility PV installations in the U.S. grew 670% over the course of just two years from 2010 to 2012.” In 2012 alone, 1,769 MW of utility PV was connected to the grid, a number 59% greater than the cumulative total in all prior years. As the technology becomes more cost-competitive, the opportunities to take advantage of the resource will continue to expand.
