Supporting Offshore Installation Operations
Growth of the offshore wind industry and fierce advances in component sizes for offshore installation has led to MPI Offshore’s need to introduce existing heavy lift plant, new technology and custom-built tools to seamlessly integrate with the installation spread of their current fleet of purpose-built wind turbine installation vessels (WTIVs) – through MPI Equipment.
Over the last decade of offshore construction, it has been clear to MPI Offshore that it is not only a vessel that is essential to the safe and successful installation of wind turbines and sub sea foundations. Sound engineering practices, innovative design and application, the investment in required equipment and tooling, and the professional team to perform. MPI Equipment was formed to own and operate the additional items of construction equipment used either with, or to complement, the WTIVs and required by MPI Offshore.
Using previous knowledge and concepts from power generation construction and the oil & gas industry, has allowed the WTIVs to perform beyond the conventional boundaries of imposed crane capacity.
Whilst the MPI Resolution was the first of her kind, and built with a 300Te crane, MPI soon became challenged with the growth in the monopiles for the wind turbine foundations. Using a combination of innovation, design engineering and mechanical know-how, the vessel was soon able to install 600Te monopiles for the Thanet Windfarm.
This lateral thinking and efforts to maximise the vessel’s use, and optimise the clients’ schedule has led to investments in amongst others:
- Fleets of offshore specification SPMTs (Self-Propelled Modular Trailers)
- Vessel mounted MUF (Monopile Upending Frame)
- Uni-directional monopile gripper assembly
- Sub-sea inter-array cable-laying and burial ROVs
- Lifting tools
- Training of specialist operatives
