Technical Assistance Services

The U.S. Department of Energy offers technical assistance supporting energy efficiency and renewable energy. This technical assistance can include direct advice on issues or goals, tools and maps, and training. Some select technical assistance offerings are listed below.

For States and Communities

The State and Local Solution Center provides states and communities with resources addressing strategic energy planning, policy, financing, data management, and technologies to help them implement successful energy efficiency and renewable energy projects.

The Weatherization Assistance Program Technical Assistance Center provides resources to help states and communities reduce energy costs for low-income families, particularly for the elderly and people with disabilities.

Tribal Energy Technical Assistance provides strategic energy planning and project development technical assistance to federally recognized Indian tribes, tribal energy resource development organizations, and other organized tribal groups and communities to advance tribal renewable energy and energy efficiency projects.


Analytical Tools provide assistance in analyzing data and facilitating decision making.

Federal Energy Management

FEMP Technical and Project Assistance offers technical help to Federal agencies to successfully implement energy- and water-efficiency projects.


Geothermal Maps identify renewable, geothermal resources, possible locations for implementation of various geothermal technologies, and actual and potential geothermal power generation sites.

Geothermal Software and Data model geothermal systems and economics and provide data related to geothermal technology and energy to assist with calculation and model construction.

Homes and Buildings

Building America Solution Center provides residential building professionals with access to expert information on hundreds of high-performance design and construction topics, including air sealing and insulation, HVAC components, windows, indoor air quality, and much more.

Building Energy Codes Program supports energy efficiency in buildings through the development and implementation of model codes and standards. DOE also provides technical assistance to states and localities as they adopt and enforce energy codes.

Building Energy Software Tools Directory provides building software tools for evaluating energy efficiency, renewable energy, and sustainability in buildings.

Building Energy Codes Program State Technical Assistance helps states and local code enforcement jurisdictions adopt, upgrade, implement, and enforce residential and commercial codes.

Hydrogen and Fuel Cells

Fuel Cell Technologies Education supports demonstrations and commercialization by providing technically accurate and objective information to key target audiences involved in the use of hydrogen and fuel cells today.


The Combined Heat and Power Technical Assistance Partnerships (CHP TAPs) promote and assist with market transformation for combined heat and power, waste heat to power, and district energy technologies.

Technical Assistance for Manufacturers helps companies identify and implement energy-saving projects and improve energy management programs and energy performance.


The SunShot Initiative's Ask an Expert can be used to pose a solar technical question.

The Solar Outreach Partnership helps communities overcome individual needs and barriers with assistance that may take the form of program or policy analysis, research support, a technical review of an RFP, market analysis, or aid in designing a new solar incentive program.

The Solar Technical Assistance Team provides technical assistance services, such as policy evaluation and potential impact analysis, to state policy makers and staff regarding solar technology deployment.


Tools from the Alternative Fuels Data Center include calculators, interactive maps, and data searches that can assist fleets, fuel providers, and other transportation decision makers in their efforts to reduce petroleum use.

Clean Cities Technical Assistance has 'Tiger Teams' that help states and local communities overcome obstacles for deploying alternative fuels and advanced vehicles.


Hydropower Resource Assessment and Characterization offers reports and maps that assess the total technically recoverable energy available in the nation's powered dams, non-powered dams, and untapped stream-reaches.

Marine and Hydrokinetic Resource Assessment and Characterization offers reports and maps that assess the technically recoverable energy available in the nation's waves, tidal and river currents, and ocean thermal gradients


Wind Resource Maps and Data provides states, utilities, and wind energy developers with utility-scale wind resource maps to locate and quantify the wind resource, identifying potentially windy sites within a fairly large region and determining a potential site's economic and technical viability.
