GPR has gained acceptance in the rail industry as an industry standard tool for ballast condition monitoring. Geolitix can import data from all major radar manufacturers, including Sensors and Software, IDS, and GSSI. Rail ballast studies generally involve identification of target horizons (e.g., base of ballast), and the study of the ballast attributes, including the moisture distribution (from automated hyperbola matching of individual ballast rocks if the radar is of high enough resolution) and mapping variations in the ballast reflection attributes (amplitude and frequency content).
