Training Academy

The SERS training academy launched in early 2013 and has gone from strength to strength. A drive and passion within the company to provide high quality installations drove its development and was a key factor in its conception. By providing training courses not only to our employees but also the local community we can safeguard that the work carried out specifically in our sector is of the highest standards; whilst also giving something back to the community.

With solid wall insulation at its core, the academy covers a variety of courses, including those relevant to renewable technologies, all linked with energy efficiency and the services which we offer. The SERS training academy is the best place for gaining your qualifications or just getting a taster of a new area.

The academy, with 20 training bays and classroom facilities, is housed in our head office in Caerphilly. This fantastic facility allows us to provide a real hands on experience whilst also delivering the core fundamentals through lectures, seminars and presentations.

SERS have always been passionate about providing training and have employed over 50 apprentices. The training academy has not only facilitated the recruitment of further apprentices but also allows us to offer training to others wanting to get into the market place or upgrade their skills.

Below is a list of the courses which are currently being ran out of the SERS training academy. For further information on any course or to enquire about start dates please get in touch. External Wall Insulation (E.W.I.) is one of the most efficient and practical ways of conserving heat and reducing harmful emissions as a result of burning fossil fuels into the atmosphere. 45% of a properties heat loss  is due to inadequately insulated walls. This programme has been designed as an introduction to

  • Installation of EWI systems.
  • Greater awareness of legislative drivers
  • Different systems on the market and the components that make up these EWI systems.
  • Practical experience of installing different elements of these systems

The SERS Academy has developed a 5 day course entitled “the introduction to wall insulation” as a first step for those looking to enter the EWI industry. This practical based programme (up to 1 day theory) gives each candidate the time to fully appreciate the skill set required to become a first class installer through practical tasks. This programme is targeted at qualified renderers, plastering apprentices or those who possess good trowel skills.

Based at the academy in Caerphilly, this course is inclusive of all materials, tools, hand-outs, lunch, morning and afternoon refreshments. Successful candidates will receive a SERS attendance certificate with the opportunity to progress onto a CITB upskilling programme (SUP) in External Wall Insulation.

To make the experience as realistic as possible all materials used are those used on SERS site’s from the insulation board to the stone dash finish.

On completion of this programme all students will have a greater understanding of the different systems available on the market, components that make up the different system and experience of applying these components on one system

SERS is running a series of courses for advisers and assessors for the Government’s Green Deal programme.  We are launching three courses which will result in full Green Deal accreditation. Homes have to be inspected and assessed by an accredited assessor before they can qualify for the Green Deal programme, which is the largest ever Government-backed green home improvement project.

The courses include

  • a three day course for Green Deal advisors
  • a four day course for domestic energy assessors
  • 12-day advanced course which covers both disciplines. This course, which is 12 days spread over four weeks will result in a full Green Deal Accreditation qualification with on-going telephone and email support.

The courses will be held at the SERS Training Academy in Caerphilly and will also include the use of five properties for domestic energy assessments.

The Government backed Green Deal programme allows consumers to pay for home insulation and fuel-saving work through their electricity bills. Before Green Deal funding can be allocated, a property has to be assessed by an accredited advisor working to a strict code of practice. Expected energy savings must outweigh the cost of the work, which is repaid in instalments through energy bills, which remain with the property rather than the owner.
