Sandy Spring Friends School Solar Array Powers Ahead Video
Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett recently joined more than 500 students, faculty and friends of the Sandy Spring Friends School on the school's 140 acre campus to celebrate the completion of a 477 kW solar array.
Maryland-based Standard Solar designed and installed the 2000-panel photovoltaic array, which will provide cleaner and less expensive electricity to the school's facilities and their co-located adventure park.
The project is owned and was developed by UGI Performance Solutions with whom the school has entered into a power purchase agreement that lowers their utility bills.
In addition to saving the school money on its utility bills, the system is expected to offset an estimated 504 metric tons of carbon which is equivalent to removing almost 99 passenger vehicles per year from the road. The system's economic and environmental impact was not lost on the students in attendance.
The dedication event featured congratulatory remarks from County Executive Leggett, Standard Solar CEO Tony Clifford and UGI Performance Solution's Chuck Miller.
The remarks were followed by a ribbon cutting and a celebratory balloon launch photographed from a helicopter.
