When coating mica insulation materials, peaks of high contamination occur. The exhaust air containing organic compounds generates excess heat when oxidized in the regenerative thermal oxidizer (RTO). The properties of ceramic honeycomb blocks allow for the storage of that excess heat, for the production of high-pressure steam.
During the destruction of contaminants, SiO is produced from siliceous components. The SiO accumulates in the combustion chamber area of the ceramic blocks. In conventional heat exchangers these deposits are difficult to remove. CTP has developed a special kind of RTO with two grid levels which facilitates the cleaning of the ceramic layers with water, the canals of the honeycomb block allowing a washing process.
Summary: The cleaning problem of the heat exchangers was solved. The contaminants were destroyed efficiently and economically while steam for the production process was generated at no additional cost.
