Transformer for Power Transmission - Energy - Power Distribution

A step up transformer is used to increase the voltage of the electrical energy transmitted over long distances through power transmission lines. This is because transmitting high voltage over long distances reduces energy losses due to resistance in the transmission lines. The step-up transformer is placed at the power station to step up the voltage from the generator before it is transmitted through the power lines. On the other hand, a step down transformer is used to decrease the voltage of the electrical energy before it is distributed to homes and businesses. This is because most electrical devices require lower voltage than what is transmitted through the power lines. The step-down transformer is usually located at the substation, where the voltage is reduced before it is distributed to the customers.
