A cold hard lesson
At this moment much of America is suffering. Millions of people are struggling without elecrtricity and heat during an epic cold spell. In Texas alone four million famalies have no power! Sadly, It did not have to be this bad. This situation's root cause is energy demand in extreme conditions. We have known for decades that the first best step for energy management is Reduce Before Your Produce. Energy demand reduction means we need less standard and renewable energy, yet the bulk of the governmental and utility company focus and effort has been pushing renewable energy. Reducing energy needs has a better payback with long term rewards and benefits but has been a secondary consideration.
With the current huge winter event, solar arrays and wind farms have provided much dimminished production when we needed it most! Take a look at the Stategic Options For Climate Change Mitigation Chart.
Insulation improvements has an over 150% payback! This is a comparison of the ROI of all diiferent options used for carbon emmission reductions (which is also provides the best ROI for energy demand deduction) over many years. Sustainability works best! Imagine if millions of people had improved the insulation in thier homes and heating efficiency. In that case, there would be much less energy demand, and outages and even resident without energy would be somewhat more comfortable and getting more benefits from supplement heat!
A life lesson has been provided to us this week. We need to put first things first. Reduce Before We Produce has better payback and benefits. Then we can "rightsize" renewable energy growth with lessened demand. When the need is the greatest, sustainability will provide the most benefits and rewards.
