Clarke Energy USA has successfully designed and commissioned a combined heat and power (CHP) system in Clinton, Maine, aimed at maximising energy efficiency and reducing emissions. This CHP solution complements a biogas upgrading facility in the area. Peaks Renewables, in collaboration with Maine’s dairy industry, is developing renewable natural gas (RNG) locally at their anaerobic digestion facility.

  • Location: Clinton, Maine USA
  • Commissioning: January 2024
  • Designer/Installation: Clarke Energy
  • CHP Engine Manufacturer: MAN
  • Engine Type: COE280NC
  • Fuel Type: Natural Gas

This distributed power installation is anchored by a Clarke Energy assembled COE280NC CHP unit providing 280kW of electricity for site processes and 1.5 MMBtu of thermal energy needed to heat the anaerobic digesters on site producing the renewable biogas.

In addition to the CHP unit, Clarke Energy has installed a 500kW Kohler Power back up gas-fuelled generator to further increase the reliability of the entire system. The combination of these two units is an ultra-resilient on-site power solution that drives a biogas upgrading facility ultimately producing renewable natural gas.

The entire system was developed, installed, and is currently maintained by Clarke Energy USA teams. This particular CHP unit was assembled and containerised in our Massachusetts office, while our regional service teams regularly maintain the equipment functions in Maine. Clarke Energy is proud to continue supporting clean, efficient energy systems in an effort to reduce global carbon emissions.

Ryan Morris, Peaks Renewables commented:
“Our anaerobic digestion facility will enable us to treat farm waste sustainably and in parallel generate renewable natural gas which will help to reduce carbon emissions. We selected Clarke Energy to supply both our CHP plant and back up gas generator to deliver fuel efficiency and resilience to our operations.”
