Energy access is fundamental to the economic development of every country, driven by population increase and industrialisation, with a landscape of depleting fossil fuels and climate change. The energy industry is changing and so is the role of the traditional utility. We are seeing more IPPs, more distributed generation, more micro grids and more off grid solutions and it is not just on a commercial scale, we are seeing these changes at community level, too. As the technology behind renewable energy evolves, more consumers will cut their ties with incumbent utilities and generate their own source of power. East Africa is experiencing these changes and with its abundant natural energy resources and its drive towards building environmentally cleaner energy; there is an increase in foreign direct investment into the region, influencing the rapid uptake of renewable and clean energy solutions.

The 17th Annual Africa Energy Forum – the official gathering of African power industry stakeholders. The Africa Energy Forum (AEF) is the only international Forum focussed on power generation for Africa with attendance restricted to stakeholders (investors, consultants, developers, ministries, utilities, regulators etc.) from the power sector. AEF comes to the UAE for the first time to capture the massive potential of Middle Eastern investment, and to learn from a region that has successfully built its gas based economy into a booming global empire.
The 15th Africa Energy Forum (AEF) will take place from 19-21st June 2013 at Barcelona’s International Convention Centre (CCIB). The Africa Energy Forum is the international marketplace where governments and power utilities of Africa unite with the energy industry to focus on delivering power infrastructure projects in Africa. All the players in the industry are in the same place at the same time. As the International Finance Corporation noted in 2011 "AEF is the biggest and most interesting conference on African energy in the world.”
