Chemical Process Engineering
The progressive substitution of petroleum as feedstock for fuels and chemical base materials means that classic methods such as Fischer-Tropsch synthesis to produce gasoline and diesel from biogenic source materials have gained new importance, reflected in the development of new catalysts for example. At the same time, the distributed occurrence of biomass also demands a distributed method of conversion so as to attain cost-effective process chains. At the end of the process may be an easily transportable interim product or a marketable end product.
Energy Systems
Energy is very necessary, nprocess can be operated without energy input. But we need tuse energy very efficient in order tsave resources and tconvert our energy system towards a renewable and sustainable one. The whole situation is quite sophisticated and complex, besides technical issues there are political and economical framework conditions tbe considered.
Thermal Process Engineering
The Department of Thermal Process Engineering works in the research fields of pyrolysis, gasification, combustion and gas purification. It utilises high-quality pilot plant scale experimental equipment. Research is concerned essentially with the conversion of materials containing carbon. The materials in question may be a wide variety of solids and gases. Thermal waste treatment by pyrolysis, for example, relates to gas production with combined heat and power generation in a CHP plant. The pyrolysis rotary kiln can, however, also be used for chemical production processes which are unable to withstand oxygen and require temperatures of at least 500 °C.
