European Institute for Energy Research EIFER
More than ten years ago, EDF and the University of Karlsruhe (now: Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, KIT) decided to establish a common research institute devoted to energy and the environment in Karlsruhe, called EIFER, European Institute for Energy Research. Considered as the first R&D international center of the EDF Group, complementing the assets of the EDF Research & Development with around 2000 researchers, its mission is to develop a strong connection with the German academic institutes, mainly with KIT, counting 8000 researchers and 18000 university students, and build a high level German and European partnership network. EIFER is a widely recognized research institute, with more than 110 employees from 14 different nationalities, developing a multidisciplinary know-how around the topics of “Sustainable Cities” and “Distributed Energy”, together with high level scientific and industrial partners, and contributing to several national and European public funded projects.

Organization
EIFER is a European Economic Interest Grouping between 2 members: EDF and KIT. EIFER is registered at the Chamber of Commerce of Mannheim. The governance of EIFER is structured around the General Assembly of Members, with 2 persons representing respectively the Members, and the Board, with 2 persons for each Member. EIFER has a Management Team, constituted by a director appointed by the Board, a deputy director, 5 research group leaders and 1 group leader for the General Affairs.
Mission:
The EEIG EIFER has the mission:
- to develop know-how and innovative solutions and products for the management of energy and for related economical and environmental questions,
- to improve the contacts between academic research and development and the industry to address short term and long term industrial aimed questions and to make easier the knowledge transfer between academic research and development and industry,
- to develop the connection to the research and development networks of universities, cities and industry, to do research, development and study work for third parties, worldwide, particularly in Europe and more particularly in Germany and in the Land Baden-Württemberg,
- to reinforce the position of the members in European and other public programmes
History
EIFER has been created in September 2001, by EDF and the University of Karlsruhe, in order to develop their scientific collaboration, through joint projects applied to industrial issues. The University of Karlsruhe merged in October 2008 with the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe to form the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). EIFER counts now 113 researchers from 14 different nationalities in different areas of research in the field of energy and environment.
