Frederick D. Berkeley was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1901. He graduated from Cornell University in 1923 as a Mechanical Engineer and went to work for the Ross Heater & Manufacturing Company in Buffalo, New York. He had become interested in the design of heat exchangers while working on laboratory experiments in heat transfer at Cornell. While working at Ross Heater, he met and became friends and eventual business partners with Harold Graham.
Mr. Graham incorporated Graham Manufacturing in 1936 and was joined in partnership by Mr. Berkeley and Scott Ross (from Ross Heater) in 1941. Mr. Ross retired in 1943 and sold his company share to Graham and Berkeley.
